Sod Poodles Home Opener Review
The Sod Poodles' opening homestand of the 2023 season came to a close with a tough 11-5 loss to the Corpus Christi Hooks on Sunday afternoon at HODGETOWN in Amarillo, Texas. Despite the loss, the Sod Poodles finished their homestand with a 5-4 record and sit atop the Texas League South Division.
Corpus Christi got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after their first three at-bats of the game, while the Sod Poodles were held to just two hits through the opening third of the game. Ryan Bliss led off the bottom of the first with a single, extending his team-best hit streak to eight games. Later in the inning, D-backs no.4-rated prospect Deyvison De Los Santos collected a two-out single to join Bliss on the basepaths, but both were left stranded.
The Hooks extended their lead to as much as eight runs over the next five innings while holding the Sod Poodles hitless. However, Amarillo finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tristin English and A.J. Vukovich hit back-to-back solo home runs. Roby Enriquez followed with a double, the third straight extra-base hit for Amarillo. Although the Sod Poodles bats seemed to get into a groove, a pair of groundouts ultimately pushed Enriquez over to third but failed to allow him to score and cut into the Hooks lead any more than the two runs.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Tim Tawa drew a one-out walk, followed by a single and another walk to load the bases for Vukovich. His second hit of the day brought home another two runs as Amarillo cut the deficit back to six runs after Corpus tacked on two in the top of the eighth.
The teams traded runs in the final frame of the day. A solo home run by Hooks' Will Wagner, his fifth hit of the day, capped the Hooks' scoring. Amarillo's Juan Centeno drew a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Consecutive flyouts put the Sod Poodles down to their final out of the day but sent Tawa back to the plate. He was able to drive in Centeno before the game came to an end on a diving stop by Wagner manning second base for Corpus Christi.
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for the Sod Poodles. English and Vukovich combined for the first back-to-back home runs for Amarillo this season, with Vukovich collecting two home runs in the series. Bliss extended his team-leading hit streak to eight games, second-best in the Texas League behind Tulsa's Jorbit Vivas. Deyvison De Los Santos, the Arizona Diamondbacks' no.4-rated prospect, produced a multi-hit effort in three of his last four games played, going 2-for-4 with a run scored on Sunday. For the series, De Los Santos hit .333 (7-for-21) with a double, home run, five runs, four RBI, and two walks in five games played.
Amarillo will now head to Springdale, Arkansas to face off against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Double-A Kansas City). The two teams will begin their scheduled six-game series on Tuesday, April 18 following a league-wide off day on Monday. Right-handed pitcher Deyni Olivero is slated to get the start in game one of the series, which is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start.
The Sod Poodles return back home Tuesday (Taco Tuesday) April 25th for 7:05pm game vs Frisco.

Rick Husband Airport Updates
Investing in infrastructure projects and airport updates is a great sign of anticipated growth for any city. Over the past few years, there have been update projects going on at Rick Husband Airport in Amarillo. While there is floating information of more upgrades to come in the future, the current project has unknowingly affected some residents' travel, but it has been funded by the TSA.
The airport's latest upgrade of carry-on baggage scanners is a significant improvement due to added security features for travelers leaving Amarillo. However, with great intentions of speeding things up, there have been some issues causing slow-downs periodically over the last month.
As we all know, new technology can have some growing pains. As of recently, there has not been any news of issues with shutting down any of the baggage lanes, but it is always a good idea to check with local news when arranging travel plans.
